Event Description:

Event Description:
Join us for a virtual Slovenian cooking class featuring members of the Slovenian Union of America (SUA), highlighting two treasured Slovenian and Slovenian-American baked traditions.

As a brief introduction, Joe Valencic, President of the Slovenian Union of America, will speak about SUA’s long and rich history of preserving Slovenian culinary traditions through the publication of Slovenian-American cookbooks.

Cookie Maxin will demonstrate how to make kolački — delicate, festive pastries made from a tender, butter- or cream cheese–based dough and filled with sweet fruit preserves, nuts, or cheese. Kolački are beloved across Slovenian-American households and often prepared for holidays, celebrations, and special family gatherings.

Berni Blatnik will demonstrate how to make žlinkrofi, a classic Slovenian dumpling that is versatile, economical, and deeply comforting. Traditionally filled with meat, these dumplings can be served in soup, browned in butter, or frozen for long-term storage—making them as practical as they are delicious. This cooking demo is perfect for anyone who loves dumplings of all kinds, from Polish pierogi and Italian ravioli to Japanese gyoza and beyond. Berni will share how her family relied on žlinkrofi during the Great Depression, highlighting the dish’s resourcefulness and enduring place in Slovenian home cooking.

Tune in to celebrate Slovenian heritage, learn beloved family recipes, and enjoy a delicious cultural experience from home!
